How to choose the best sunscreen for your face
1. Don’t skimp on quality of your sunscreen
The label on your face sunscreen should say “broad spectrum” to guard against both UVA rays that age you and UVB rays that burn you.
You’ll also what to sue you’re getting an SPF of 30 or higher to make sure that you’re fully protected while you’re outdoor.
2. Know the difference – physical vs chemical sunscreen
The two most common types of sunscreen are chemical sunscreen and physical sunscreen.
Physical sunscreens create a barrier on the skin that filter out UV rays, while chemical sunscreens absorb and scatter the sun’s harsh UV rays.
What it really comes down to is preference. Physical sunscreens use mineral-based ingredients, like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, to block UV rays and are often better for sensitive skin types, and have a longer shelf life but do need to be applied generously to be effective and can appear a chalky at times.
Chemical sunscreens contain chemical compounds that absorb and break down UV rays. They tend to be thinner and spread on the skin like a lotion, making it ideal for daily use.
Less product is needed to protect the skin. But they can be more irradiating due to the compounds and only becomes effective approximately 20 minutes after application.
My personal preference is using physical sunscreens when I’m outdoors and using chemical sunscreens on a day to day basis if I’m just indoors.
3. Know your skin type and its needs
If you have dry skin, choose a face sunscreen with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides. If you have oily skin, look for sunscreens that have a matte finish.
Lighter spray or gel sunscreen formulation will also feel less heavy if you tend to get shiny throughout the day.
4. Sunscreen application rules
As a rule of thumb, this should be the last step of your morning skin care before applying makeup. That means it goes on after your serum or moisturizer and before your makeup.
You should give it a few minutes to absorb into your skin before you apply your foundation just so it won’t move around or get rubbed off.
If you’re using a chemical sunscreen make sure you apply it 20 minutes before sun exposure so it will be effective. If you’ve used a physical sunscreen it will be effective right away.
You should also reapply if you’re spending extended periods of time outdoors, sweating or in water.
Now that you the sunscreen basics, lets here’s the roundup of best sunscreens for face that will leave your skin looking youthful and healthy.
