Looking for a fancy breakfast idea that’s easy and fun to make? A breakfast board (aka breakfast charcuterie board or brunch board) is a creative breakfast idea that everyone will love!
This past weekend was my wedding anniversary and I wanted to try a creative breakfast idea to celebrate the occasion. But at the same time, I wanted something easy to make since we would be celebrating the night before as well.
I came across the idea of breakfast boards and brunch boards on Pinterest and thought it was genius! Both me and my hubby are big fans of charcuterie boards with meats and cheeses, so grazing board for breakfast sounded like the perfect fun, yet fancy breakfast idea.
The best thing about breakfast boards is that they can be as simple or as complicated as you like it. What it comes down to is it’s a variety of breakfast and brunch foods arranged on a board or platter, that you can easily snack and graze from.
You can theme it around specific foods like pancakes or pastries, or make it a variety of your favourite breakfast items. It’s super versatile and you can easily make a simple grazing board with a just few things for a brunch for two, or a large brunch platter if you’re serving up breakfast or brunch for a large group.
And because breakfast charcuterie boards also look stunning, they’re amazing for special occasions like birthdays, holidays, and entertaining guests, or even for casual weekend brunches when you just want to do something fun for the whole family.
How to make a breakfast board
To start you’ll need a grab a large cheese plate or charcuterie board or platter to arrange your foods. I love this smaller one for when it’s just the two of us, and this large one is great if you’re entertaining. Also you may need some smaller side dishes like this to hold syrups or fixings.
The best thing about creating breakfast and brunch boards is that you can make them out of almost anything you have in your fridge. It doesn’t have to get complicated.
But I do have a few tips for some breakfast items that you might want to include on your breakfast board. I love having a good mix of flavours and foods so I like to include at least 1-2 of each of the foods from the 4 categories below:
Start with carbs
Bagels, toast, croissants, waffles and french toast are a great breakfast carbs to add to your food board. They make good bases that can be topped with other sweet or savoury foods.
Add something sweet
Fresh fruit, dried fruit, honey, butter, and syrups are great options for that something sweet to your board.
Tip: Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and grapes also make great filler items in between your bigger items on your breakfast board to help make it look full!
Then something savoury
Some breakfast ideas for savoury foods for your brunch board are smoked salmon, cheeses, capers, nuts, and seeds.
And some protein as well
Eggs, bacon, sausage and hummus great protein options to add to your breakfast tray. Just remember to cut them into bite size pieces!
Tips for putting together your breakfast board
Start by adding your bigger items first and plated items first. Arrange them into groups around the board. Then fill in the open areas with smaller items like berries, cheese cubes, and garnishes.
Bring your food to room temperature before you start arranging them as well. This will help prevent condensation on items that are too cold.
Just have fun with it! There’s really no right or wrong way to arrange your breakfast board!
