This week I’m celebrating one of my favourite style icons and #girlbosses of all time, Coco Chanel, with this chic work wear look I’ve put together in collaboration with Ann Taylor.
Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was an iconic French fashion designer who changed the way women dressed all around the world. Although she was born poor, she worked as a seamstress in her youth, through her chic designs and her name soon became synonymous with style, luxury and class.
Chanel style is classy, chic, and effortless and embodies the beauty of simplicity and femininity. One of the things that makes Coco Chanel’s style so special, is that many of her clothes are still considered modern today.
Much like Chanel, Ann Taylor clothes are feminine, modern, and thoughtful with elegant and timeless style, and designed for the modern woman. Their clothing is well made and lasts the test of time and fashion. Many of my work wear looks are from Ann Taylor, including these looks here, here and here. And I love how they can easily transition from lunch hour to happy hour and keep me looking chic around the clock.
5 Elements to Dressing like a Chanel Girl
1. Monochrome Colors
Combinations of black and white are a classic Chanel trait. After all, she’s famously credited to making the little back dress an iconic staple in women’s wear. There is a clean sophistication to wearing monochrome that is so chic. And it makes a great base for accessorizing which leads to point 2..
2. Pearl & Gold Details
Chanel always made a statement with jewelry and accessories. A little glamour, like string of pearls, gold details, chain straps and brooches paired with minimalist clothing really help make that Chanel-esque look come to life.
3. Well Fitted Clothes
When it comes to how your clothes fit, think architecturally. Coco Chanel said, “Fashion is architecture. It is a matter of proportions.” She liked jackets, purses, skirts and hems with straight lines, and fit neither too loose nor too tight.
Chanel is famously known for its use of tweed, wool crepe and woven fabrics that in many of her past collections. These classic fabrics have a beautiful way of adding texture and dimension to clothing as well as that Chanel touch!
5. Good Shoes
A great pair of shoes is the icing on the cake. Shine the shoes and keep them polished. Patent leather is a great choice for work or evening wear. Coco Chanel is quoted saying “A woman with good shoes is never ugly.” A classic pump, a clean tennis shoe, a chic loafer or espadrilles are all great options for your Chanel girl look.
With these 5 tips, you may be able to channel Coco Chanel’s fashion wisdom in your own closet without looking further than a string of pearls and a little black dress!
My Own Chanel Inspired Look
For my own Chanel inspired look from Ann Taylor, I started this look off with this white pencil skirt that is great classic piece for any wardrobe. You’re not quite able to see it in my photos here, but there is some great pearl button detail on it as well. Then I paired it with this houndstooth cardigan with black trim, a very Chanel-esque piece with its black and white pattern and gold button detailing.
As for my top, I kept it simple with this ribbed turtleneck that has a slight gold sheen to it to add a little bit a neutral colour variation to this black and white outfit. And since it’s the dead of winter here in Toronto, I wore a pair of tights to keep me warm and as well as continue the monochrome theme.
As for accessories, I have this cute knotted headband which like a toned down version of the Chanel turban paired with some gold chain link earrings. Then to complete the look, I added a simple black cross body bag, and some shiny bow pumps.
