Today I’m celebrating one of my favourite style icons of all time, Coco Chanel. Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was an iconic French fashion designer who changed the way women dressed all around the world.
Although she was born poor, she worked as a seamstress in her youth, through her chic designs and her name soon became synonymous with style, luxury and class.
Chanel style is classy, chic, and effortless and embodies the beauty of simplicity and femininity. One of the things that makes Coco Chanel’s style so special, is that many of her clothes are still considered modern and still fashionable today.
It would be a dream to have a closet full of Chanel clothes, shoes and bags, but that’s just not realistic for most of us. But creating your own Chanel inspired outfits doesn’t have to break the bank!
Since Chanel aesthetic is so classic, you probably already have many of the pieces you need for a Chanel inspired look. So today, I thought I would share how to in dress Chanel style by combining a few of the key elements of fashion.
How to Dress in Chanel Style
1. Monochrome Colors
Combinations of black and white are a classic Chanel aesthetic. After all, Coco Chanel is famously credited to making the little back dress an iconic staple in women’s wear.
There is a simple sophistication to wearing monochrome that is so chic. And it makes a great base for accessorizing which leads to point 2..
2. Gold and Pearl Accessories
Chanel always made a statement with jewelry and accessories. A little glamour, like string of pearls, gold details, chain straps and brooches paired with minimalist clothing really help make that Chanel-esque look come to life.
3. Quilted Handbag
Chanel handbag are pricey and owning one is a big investment. If you’re looking for that Chanel aesthetic, go for a leather quilted handbag. Some classic shapes are the square and rectangle shape backs with top handles or cross body style convertible straps.
I find that Rebecca Minkoff has many great Chanel style look alike bags that are well made, durable and fairly priced!
4. Well Fitted Clothes
When it comes to how your clothes fit, think architecturally. Coco Chanel said, “Fashion is architecture. It is a matter of proportions.” She liked jackets, purses, skirts and hems with straight lines, and fit neither too loose nor too tight.
5. Tweed Fabrics
Chanel is famously known for her use of tweed, wool crepe and woven fabrics that in many of her past collections. These classic fabrics have a beautiful way of adding texture and dimension to clothing as well as that Chanel touch!
6. Classic Shoes
A great pair of shoes completes the Chanel look. Ballet flats and espadrilles make great everyday shoes. While pointed pumps, and sling backs are elevated options for work or evening wear. And also let’s not forget the classic contrast cap-toe that’s a common Chanel style shoe.
And with these tips, you should be able to channel Coco Chanel’s fashion wisdom in your own closet without looking further than a string of pearls and a little black dress!
