I’m having a full blown case of the winter blues lately. January was the longest month ever, and the persistent chilly temperatures aren’t been helping one bit. For the past few weeks, I’ve been living in uniform of sweaters, leggings and boots. Caught in the cycle of wearing the same thing over and over, I’ve just be uninspired when it comes to my personal style lately, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. So to help those of your with the nothing-to-wear blues, I’ve put together a list of 5 ideas to help you to get out of a style rut whenever a shopping spree is just not an option.
5 Ways to Get Out of a Style Rut without Breaking the Bank
The key to getting out of a style rut is to break through those old patterns and getting out of the comfort zone you have built up for yourself. You’ll need to put on your creative hat and get a little inspiration! So here are 5 ways to refresh your style palette and pull yourself out of a style rut.
1. Clean out your closet
When you’re in a style rut, it’s like breaking a bad habit. You keep going to the same outfits over and over and forget what else you actually own. It’s easy to see only what’s in front of you and forget about all the other great pieces of clothing that are hiding in the depths of your closet. Doing a closet clean out and re-organization is a good way to take inventory and see what you actually have. You’ll find pieces you love that you’ve forgotten about, or even pieces you’ve hardly worn at all that, and who knows what else that you can add to your current circulation. Plus, once you’re done, it will feel so good to have an organized closet, because I’m sure you’ve all heard about Marie Kondo and her spark joy method by now!
2. Mix it up!
Now that you’ve cleaned out your closet and found some less worn items. It’s time to get creative and mix and match those tops, bottoms, shoes into new inspiring outfits. Making new outfits out of the clothes you already have are a great way to make those old pieces seem new again. Try mixing prints, colors and even layering different pieces for creative new combinations.
3. Accessorize
I’m a firm believer that accessories can make or break an outfit, and in this case, you need them to make the outfit. Nothing can revamp an old outfit like a great statement necklace. So try a new necklace with a shirt you normally wouldn’t, add a fun belt to a dress, or even pair an unexpected pair of shoes with one of your typical outfits.
4. Get Inspired
If you’re still feeling blah about your wardrobe, the world of fashion is just at your finger tips. In the digital world we live in, a great way to give you new ideas on how you might want to style the clothes you have. Pinterest is one of my favourite places to get inspired, it provides endless inspiration for possible outfit combinations and of course Instagram and a never ending feed for stylish outfit ideas as well. Many of the times while I’m browsing, I’ll see people style similar items styling them in a way I never thought of!
5. Revamp Your Beauty and Hair Routine
Sometimes the problem with your style rut is really not about your clothes at all, but in another routine that’s getting old. Trying out a new bold new lipstick with an outfit, or vamping up that eye make up routine can be the refresh that you’re looking for. And you know a new hair style is always a good way to change up your look too!
