How to Keep Your Hair Curled
and Extend the Life of Your Hairstyle
1. Go easy on the conditioner
When washing your hair, use conditioner sparingly and just on the areas its needed such as the ends. Also make sure you rinse it out very well. Excess conditioner can cause your hair to be slippery, weigh it down, and make it difficult to hold a curl.
2. Make sure your hair is 100% dry.
Before you curl your hair, it’s 100% dry. Removing all the moisture from your hair will allow your hair to hold a curl that will last.
Also, if your hair is wet or even just a little bit damp, it’s much more susceptible to damage from your styling tools.
And for more hair hold and polish, blow-dry your hair into the general shape and direction you want for your final hairstyle. This sets the stage for the hairstyle you’re trying to make.
I’ve been using the GHD Helios Professional Hair Dryer and it’s been doing an amazing job of drying my hair quickly and gently.
It’s the reigning queen of blow dry with multiple beauty awards in 2020 for best blowdryer from Cosmopolitan, Glamour, New Beauty and She Finds.
Despite being so powerful, the GHD Helios Professional Dryer is one of the quietest blow dryers I’ve ever used. Plus it’s light-weight and economically balanced so it’s comfortable to hold and maneuver if while round brushing.
It has two different heat settings, to help you avoid unnecessary heat damage from using higher temperatures than needed. And uses advanced ionic technology, so that your hair is shiny and frizz free.
3. Don’t curl your hair humid room
Humidity is the enemy of long lasting curls. So if you blow-dry and curl your hair in the same room where you just took a steamy shower, you’re making it extra difficult for your hair to hold on to curls that last.
When there is extra moisture in the air, that means there’s extra moisture in your hair, which prevents even the best hair tools from properly curling your hair.
4. Invest in good styling tools
The quality of your styling tools can make all the difference between your curls lasting and falling flat within a few hours.
Professional styling tools will be hotter, heat up evenly, and made with materials that cause less damage to your hair. Investing in high-quality hot tools is an investment in your hair’s health and beauty.
I’ve been using the GHD Platinum+ Styler to curl my hair, and have been loving the results of how long my curls last.
The GHD Platinum+ Styler is part of their line of SMART line of tools that adjusts heat across its floating plates to recognize the thickness of your hair and styling speed.
I love that the Platinum+ Styler is such a versatile tool that allows me to a variety of styles, from bouncy waves and loose waves to sleek and straight styles.
I mostly use it to make curls and waves because it’s so efficient and only requires a quick pass over my hair. The curls and waves it produces are shiny, bouncy and can last for days at a time.
5. Pass on the hair spray
Hair spray is often the first thing you think of when you want to keep hair curly. But instead of the old spritz, go for a texturing spray or dry shampoo instead.
Hairspray can often be too heavy for your curls and actually creates weight on them causing them to droop.
Using something more lightweight like a texturizing spray will be more effective and you don’t need a ton of product either.
Texturizing spray is great because it adds volume and shine and neutralize moisture in your hair as well.
If you’re in a bind, I find that dry shampoo also has a similar effect of creating texture and as well as giving hair more body which makes your curls look fuller and bouncier overall.
The bonus to using dry shampoo is that it helps to keeps your hairstyle longer by keeping your hair free of excess oils as well.
6. Protect your curls when you sleep
Now that we’ve run though all the tricks to make sure you’re creating a good long lasting curl, here’s how make curls stay.
When you go to bed at night, sleep with your hair in a high ponytail or loose bun. This will prevent you from rolling around flatting them, as well as causing more tangles that you’ll need to brush out in the morning.
I usually just pull mine up in the scrunchie on top of my head loosely. And if I put my hair in a bun, I just make sure I twist it in the same direction that I curled it in.
And with this trick you wake up your curls still intact and ready to start your day!
7. Gently comb and tease
When it comes to second or third day hair, I usually gently comb out any tangles and use a teasing brush to bring back my curls and give them a little more volume if they’re fallen flat.
I may still need to touch up a few pieces around my face if I’m styling my hair slightly differently. But usually a gently combing and a little teasing along the bottom and mid section of my hair, along with a little dry shampoo is enough to bring my hair back to life.
