The wall space above my couch has been empty for a long time, much too long. So I’ve f decided to finally put in some effort into making my home feel a little more homey, especially as we go into the winter months.
I’ve been wanting to create an DIY gallery wall for my living room for awhile now. But the task always seemed so daunting – to find the right selection of artwork, frames, and then pull it all together.
Thankfully Poster Store makes it so easy with their large selection of prints and frames, along with all the wall art inspiration they have. So we’ve teamed up to finally bring my gallery wall project to life!

How to Make a Gallery Wall
1. Start by planning out the space for your DIY gallery wall
The first step is to measure out the space where you want to put your DIY gallery wall, figure out how many art pieces you want to hang and how you want to lay them out.
Make sure you check out Poster Store’s gallery wall inspiration. They have an variety of rooms and styles to help give you ideas on how you might want to plan your own gallery wall.
I used Canva (a free graphic design tool) to make a mock-up to map out my space and plan how many frames I wanted to have for my DIY gallery. But a mock-up can be as simple as drawing your plans out with a pen and paper as well!
Here are some layout tips that I found helpful:
- Start with your largest piece and use that to anchor the rest of the wall
- Mix horizontal and vertical frames – this helps to make your wall more interesting
- Play around with pieces of different sizes to help fill the space
Below is the sample layout that I created. This gave me visual representation for how much space I’d need as well as how many pieces of artwork and frames would have to select for my wall art.
2. Select your artwork
When it comes to selecting your artwork and frames here are a few tips to finding the right pieces:
- Create a cohesive theme and colour palette – try to pick artwork with a similar colour tone and intensity
- For a modern, cohesive look – use matching frames
- For an eclectic look – try mixing and matching frame styles instead
My home is generally in cream and neutral in tones, I decided to go for more black and white art pieces, with a little bit of pink as an accent colour. As for my theme, I’ve always loved Paris, so I went for a Parisian theme with artwork of scenes of the city and complementing pieces.
Poster Store has a huge selection of affordable Scandinavian designed posters created by artist from around the world. They have a variety of artwork from nature, architecture, cities, fashion, photography and more so you can truly personalize any room of your home to just your style.
As for the frames, they have several options as well. From classic wooden frames to sleek contemporary metal frames in various tones. They also have passe-partouts as well, that will help protect your poster along with creating a beautiful white frame around them.
For my gallery wall, I went for simple white wooden frames for all my artwork pieces to create a cohesive polished look. Then choose passe-partouts for some of my frames, but not all, to make things a little more interesting.
3. Hanging your artwork
Instead of using traditional nails to hang my artwork, (though you definitely could since the frames came with hooks on the back,) I decided to use the 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips, so no nails needed!
3M Command Picture Hanging Strips are great option to hanging picture frames. They require with no tools and won’t damage your walls when you remove them.
I’d also recommend that you get an level app on you phone to help you hang your pictures straight.
And there you go, how to create a gallery wall in 3 easy steps!

October 18, 2020Your gallery wall looks lovely, what great prints! We used the 3m strips too to hang a few pieces when we moved in, in case we wanted to change them around later. Our big gallery wall we nailed to the wall though, that’s definitely the best spot for it and it makes me happy seeing all these pics up – we used a lot of photos from our family photoshoot!
Hope you are having a nice weekend! 🙂
