Tips & Tricks on How to Wash White Jeans,
Remove Stains, and Keep Them Looking White
1. Prevention is Key
Before you wear your white jeans out, use Scotchguard (just $5 at Walmart) to protect them from stains before they happen.
Protecting your white jeans with a stain repellent can be the difference between that drop of olive oil wiping off your pants easily and having it really set in there as a stain.
2. Eat with a napkin on your lap
Not only is it good etiquette, eating with a napkin on your lap is a great preventative trick has personally saved me from accidental stains so many times.
Whenever you sit down for a meal, place your napkin across your lap. And if anything happens to accidentally fall (and Murphy’s Law says it will since you’re wearing white jeans), you’ll be protected!
3. How remove stains on white jeans
White denim can seem like a magnet for stains, attracting all kinds of dirt, debris, and stains. If you have an accidental spill on your white denim, the key is to treat it immediately.
If you’re out and about, keep a stain stick like Tide-To-Go ($2.94 from Walmart) handy in your purse. If you happen to be without a stain stick, treat the area with a little bit of warm water and a touch of clear soap.
One of my favourite stain removers I swear by is Folex ($8 from Walmart). It lifts stains like wine, coffee, and makeup like magic. I had originally purchased it for pet messes on carpets, but quickly discovered it was great for stains of all kinds and good to use on light colored fabrics since it’s clear.
4. How to wash your white jeans
The trick on how to clean your white jeans is to keep them separately from other items in your laundry and only wash with pure whites. This simple step can preserve the quality of the white color of your jeans and keep them looking bright.
If you have time, you’ll also want to give them a second rinse to get all the detergent out before you dry them, because the alkaline in detergent can also cause yellowing over time.
5. Pass on the bleach
I know it’s tempting, but do not reach for chlorine bleach. Not only is bleach terrible for your health and the environment, but it weakens and ultimately yellows fabric over time.
Instead, add White Brite ($3.97 at Walmart) or a cup of distilled white vinegar, if natural products are more your thing, to the wash cycle.
6. How to dry your white jeans
It’s important to dry your white jeans on low heat or air dry them. Don’t just toss them in the warm dryer cycle because the higher heat temperatures cause a yellowing effect to the fabric.
7. Store your white denim inside out
In addition to white denim inside out too, but storing them inside out to prevent darker denim from rubbing off on them or having dust collect on them and cause yellowing.
Following these tips and tricks I’ve noticed such a difference in how easy it is to keep my white jeans whiter longer.Have any tips for keeping you whites bright to share? Let me know in the comments below!

April 28, 2017I’m guilty of reaching for the bleach when I get stains on white clothing. Oops. I do wash whites separately because I’m a fanatic when it comes to sorting clothes before doing the laundry. I love white clothes in the summertime, especially white denim.
