Spring is here and I couldn’t be more excited to swap out our winter wardrobe for lighter, brighter pieces.
But as much as I love the idea of sundresses and sandals, the reality of dressing for spring can be a bit more daunting.
How do you navigate the unpredictable weather and transition your wardrobe from cozy knits to breezy fabrics? That’s where transitional pieces come in.
They’re the key to creating stylish outfits that work in both winter and spring. In this post, I’m sharing 10 of my favorite transitional pieces that will help you effortlessly shift from winter to spring outfits.
From versatile jackets to colorful accessories, we’ve got everything you need to create a wardrobe that works for you, no matter the weather. So, grab your coffee and let’s get started on your ultimate guide to transitional outfits for winter to spring!
1. The Denim Jacket
Denim is a huge trend for spring, and it’s everywhere from jean maxi skirts to cargo pants. But, the trend doesn’t stop there, as denim jackets are also on fire this season.
The jean jacket is classic wardrobe staple is not only versatile but also serves as a great transitional piece from winter to spring. They’re the perfect layering piece for chilly mornings and can be styled in a variety of ways for both casual and dressy outfits.
For a casual spring look, pair a denim jacket with a simple t-shirt and your favorite pair of jeans or skirts, for a full denim look. Or experiment with layering by adding a long sleeve shirt or sweater under the jacket. This will keep you warm during cooler spring days while also creating a stylish, layered look.
One of my favourite jean jackets of the moment is this classic oversized jacket from Gap! Also this one from SHEIN is a great affordable option, and the quality of their denim is actually great!

2. Long Sleeve Body Suit
A long sleeve bodysuit is a versatile and practical piece that can be worn as a standalone top or as a base layer under jackets and coats. It’s also a great transitional piece for the winter to spring season.
When it comes to dressing for spring, a long sleeve bodysuit can be paired with a variety of outfits to create a stylish and comfortable look. You can wear it with high-waisted jeans and sneakers for a casual vibe, or dress it up with a maxi skirt and heels for a more formal occasion.
My favourite long sleeve body suits are from Abercrombie, they don’t stretch out and are super comfy to wear. And you can get them in a 2 pack to save! I also got this 3 pack of body suits from SHEIN, which were a great buy too! Old Navy and Gap, also has some great affordable options a well!
3. Button-Down Shirts
A button-down shirt is a classic wardrobe staple that can be easily incorporated into any spring transition outfit. It’s a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down and layered for added warmth during cooler days.
To create a chic and effortless spring look, consider pairing a button-down shirt with wide leg jeans and a pair of sneakers. You can also dress it up with a midi skirt and heels for a more formal occasion. And button-down shirts can also be layered under a cardigan or jacket to create texture and added warmth.
This definitely a wardrobe staple I’d invest in. This white button-down shirt is my current favourite from Plenty. Gap and Old Navy have some great affordable button down shirts, and Everlane is great for a quality transitional piece you can wear for the seasons to come. If you’re thinking of a dressier option, try a silk shirt for a more classier look!
4. The Cardigan
A cardigan is a cozy and versatile piece that’s perfect for a spring transition outfit. It’s a great layering option that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
To create a chic and comfortable spring look, consider pairing a cardigan with a simple t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. You can also dress it up with a maxi dress and sandals or heels.
One of my favourite ways of wearing a cardigan is just draped over my shoulders. It creates such an effortless look and add a little more interest to any outfit.
Cardigans come in many different styles, from chunky knit to lightweight and flowy. Choose a style that fits your personal style and wardrobe needs.
Neutral colors like black, white, and beige can be easily paired with other pieces, but don’t be afraid to experiment with bold colors and patterns for a pop of springtime flair.
5. The Trench Coat
A trench coat is a classic and stylish transitional piece that can take you from winter to spring effortlessly. Not only is it a practical wardrobe basic, but it’s also a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
When it comes to dressing for spring, a trench coat is the perfect addition to any outfit. It’s lightweight enough to wear on warmer days, but also provides the right amount of warmth on cooler days when layered. You can style it with a variety of outfits, from jeans and a t-shirt to a dress and heels.
A classic beige trench coat is always a great option, but there are also other colors and materials available that can add a touch of sophistication to your look. A black leather trench coat, for example, can provide a similar timeless look with a more edgy vibe.
To create a chic spring look, consider pairing your trench coat with a flowy dress or skirt and ankle boots. You can also layer it over a long sleeve bodysuit or button-down shirt for a more casual look.
6. The Maxi Skirt
Maxi skirts are back and this a versatile and feminine piece can be worn year-round, including during the transition from winter to spring.
You’ve probably been seeing a lot of denim maxi skirts, but I love a sleek black maxi skirt, or some florals for a more boho look.
For a spring transitional outfit, consider pairing a maxi skirt with a sweater or long sleeve bodysuit and a denim jacket or cardigan. You can also dress it up with a button-down shirt and a pair of heels.
7. Spring Dresses
Nothing says spring quite like floral print dresses! As you might already know, I’m a huge fan of floral prints with just a few examples here, here, and here.
Dresses are a versatile and effortless way to create a spring transition outfit. They come in many different styles, from maxi to mini, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

8. The Classic Moto Jacket
There are few things that are more classic than a leather motorcycle jacket. Truth be told I’ve had this one from Mackage for years, and every time spring rolls around it comes back out of my closet and I fall in love with it all over again.
Leather moto jackets perfect for breaking the wind and warm enough when layered with a sweater. Plus it’s an effortlessly chic piece that’s also ultra versatile.
It’s easy to add a feminine touch when layered with a dress or toughen it up with some jeans and boots. And if you’re not a fan of the leather style, you can find moto jackets like this pink moto jacket that transitions perfectly from workwear to weekend.
