Thermage Before and After: My Non-Surgical Skin Tightening Experience

Taking care of my skin has been a lifelong obsession of mine. It started in my teens while I was looking for ways to prevent acne, then into my twenties trying when I was getting rid of my acne scars, and now in my 30’s as I try to maintain my skin while preventing the signs of aging.

Good skincare is so important, but in the last few years I’ve realized that it can only take me so far. Lately I feel like I’ve been looking a little worse for wear, with a subtle loss of volume in the cheeks, less definition in my jawline, and some tiredness around my eyes.

I’m quite familiar with Botox and fillers, but I feel like my skin needed something to give it an extra boost. Plus, after being cooped up for the past 18 months with COVID, I wanted to return to the world fresh faced and ready, and Thermage seemed to be the perfect treatment for that!

What is Thermage?

Thermage system is a non-invasive in-office treatment that uses radiofrequency to help smooth, tighten, and contour skin for an overall younger-looking appearance.

My Thermage Consultation

I had my Thermage treatment done at Rejuuv Medi Spa. They’re a premier medi spa with 3 locations in the Greater Toronto area and specialize in the Thermage treatment.

The first step of my Thermage procedure was to go in for a consultation to make sure I was a good fit for the treatment and to help answer any questions or concerns I had about the treatment.

Of course I wanted to get all the details for you, so I lined up a bunch of questions for the nurse. She was super knowledgeable and so kindly took the time to answer all of them!

How does thermage work?

Thermage works by using radiofrequency technology to heat the deep layers of the skin and stimulate new collagen growth for a firmer, more contoured looking appearance. 

What are the typical results?

The typical results after a Thermage treatment will be tighter, lifted skin and a natural looking and refreshed appearance.

Where can Thermage be used?

Thermage can be used on the face, eyelids, neck, hands, tummy, knees, thigh and butt.

Thermage can be used on the eyelids, so it’s a great way to lift this area!

How long does it take to see results?

You will gradually see the results from Thermage appear in about 2-6 months since it takes time for your body to start producing collagen.

Immediately after the treatment, I did feel like I saw some light lifting and tightness right away, as well as a glow to my skin!

How long does it take to do a Thermage treatment?

The length of time varies and depends on the size of the area and lasts anywhere from 45-120 minutes.

For my face and eyes area, the total treatment took about 2.5 hours. Spending about 1.5 hours on my face and another hour on my eye area.

Is Thermage safe?

Thermage has an excellent safety record and has been around for decades. It’s generally a very safe procedure and one of the most performed cosmetic procedures in the world.

Does Thermage hurt?

Thermage doesn’t hurt per se, but you may feel some minor discomfort that’s completely tolerable.

What does the Thermage treatment feel like?

During the Thermage treatment, you’ll feel hot and cold sensations from the hand piece along with some vibration with minimal discomfort.

Is there any downtime or side effects?

There is little to no downtime involved with the Thermage treatment. My skin was a little flushed afterwards, but quickly calmed down in a couple hours and I was able to return to my regular activities right away.

Can you pair Thermage with other cosmetic procedures?

Yes you can pair Thermage with other procedures but you need to discuss with your medical professional as they know what is best for you. I would recommend just scheduling other cosmetic treatments a couple weeks after or before just to be safe. Always talk to your Doctor to determine what is best for you and when to schedule your next appoitnment

What kind of aftercare is required for Thermage?

There’s no specific aftercare required after your Thermage treatment. You can return to your regular skincare routine right away.

How many treatments of Thermage are required to see results?

Unlike many treatments, Thermage only requires one treatment to see results. These results will gradually appear over the course of two to six months.

My Thermage FLX Experience

Since the Thermage treatment is non-invasive, I didn’t have to do much in preparation for the procedure.

For my procedure, I would be doing the Thermage treatment for both my face and eye area. The nurse at Rejuuv was so great and made me feel completely comfortable during the whole procedure. She kept me well informed with everything she was doing every step of the way.

The first step was to cleanse my face and apply a grid guideline to my skin. Then she applied a clear gel to my face to help cool and lubricate the skin during the treatment.

The Thermage treatment itself utilizes a hand piece connected to the machine that was gently pressed on my skin, going over small sections at a time.

During the treatment I felt hot and cool sensations, as well as mild vibrations, and overall minimal discomfort. There were some moments where things got a little spicy. Particularly near the bonier areas of my face like the cheekbones and jawline, but overall it was very tolerable.

The nurse passed over each section of the face several times with the Thermage handpiece. Always checking to make sure I was comfortable and the treatment was tolerable for me.

After the nurse had completed half my face, she gave me a mirror to look at the initial results. I was surprised that the treated side of my face had already started to look more lifted with tighter skin, especially in my jaw and cheek area.

When it came to doing my Thermage for my eye area, I had to insert eye shields to help protect my eyes. These were a bit like plastic contact lenses, and since I’m already a contact lens wearer, it was no big deal for me.

I’ll admit I was a bit nervous about the eye area and eyelids, but the treatment was as easy and comfortable as the rest of my face.

The whole Thermage treatment took about 2.5 hours for my face, jawline, and eye area, including time for breaks and preparation.

After Thermage – Immediate Results

In addition to the immediate results of Thermage, the treatment is supposed to keep working for the next few months as your new collagen starts to grow and develop.

The nurse advised that I would start to notice more results in the two to six month period following my treatment.

Now two months later, I’m finding a subtle, but noticeable to my face. My after results from Thermage treatment look very natural, with a generally fresher, and more lifted appearance.

The areas I noticed the most difference is along my jawline and cheeks where I feel like the contours of my face have become more defined

I also found the skin of my eyelid felt tighter and less crepey! This is amazing since the eye area is a notoriously difficult area to treat since they’re so sensitive.

After Results from Thermage – 2 Months Later

In addition to the immediate results of Thermage, the treatment is supposed to keep working for the next few months as your new collagen starts to grow and develop.

The nurse advised that I would start to notice more results in the two to six month period following my treatment.

Now two months later, I’m finding a subtle, but noticeable to my face. My after results from Thermage treatment look very natural, with a generally fresher, and more lifted appearance.

Overall I’m very happy with the results from my Thermage treatment. I feel like it’s naturally enhanced my appearance, looking like a fresher, better-rested version of myself.
