Hyperpigmentation and How to Deal With it

One of the most common misconceptions about discolored skin is that it will fade away by itself and that no treatment, of any kind, is necessary. Some types of pigmentation, like those caused by acne, can eventually lighten up over time (keep in mind this doesn't happen overnight, but can take a few months ...

The pimple you wish you never picked, too many years worshipping in the sun without sunscreen, or even genetics can lead to hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. These  are common skincare issues that plenty of people, like me, suffer from, yet most of the time, just end up being hidden behind makeup. Well, through proper skincare you can actually treat these issues, so you can lighten the load on your foundation and let your natural skin shine through.

The cause of skin discoloration is the result of excess melanin – a natural pigment that gives color to skin. The most common issues of hyperpigmentation are: age spots on skin that is often exposed to the UV exposure and pollution; melasma, often as a result from hormone fluctuation; and scarring, which happens after acne, bug bite, or other trauma to the skin once it heals and leaves a mark behind.

Hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone have always been two of my skin major concerns. So I’ve turn to skincare from Skinceuticals to help target this problem for me..

Hyperpigmentation & Age Spots: What They Are & How To Cure Them.

My Skinceuticals Skincare Routine Targeting Hyperpigmentation and Skin Tone

1. Skinceuticals Gentle Cleanser

The basis of any good skincare routine starts with a good cleanser. The SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser is a non-irritating cream cleanser designed to cleansing skin without causing irritation and discomfort. I love the cream texture of this cleanser, and how gently it removes my makeup, excess oils and debris, leaving my skin pure, fresh and comfortable.  I typically use this cleanser twice a day, once during my morning cleanse and another in the evening during my nightly cleanse. It does a great job at removing makeup without stripping your skin of natural oils.

2. Skinceuticals CE Ferulic

We all the health benefits of vitamin C for the body, so it’s no surprise also does the same for your skin! Skinceuticals’ C E Ferulic is a powerful antioxidant combination of 15% pure vitamin C , 1% vitamin E,  and 0.5% ferulic acid. Together these ingredients protect against environmental damage caused by free radicals that can contribute to early aging. In addition to antioxidant protective benefits, this serum is the best defence against premature aging, loss of elasticity, and treating hyperpigmentation.

I’ve been using the CE Ferulic for on and off for the past 5 years, and I have to say it’s my favorite vitamin C serum.  It’s a nice light serum, that absorb almost instantly, and wears well under makeup. This serum leaves my skin feeling protected and nourished. I apply several drops daily in the morning by patting it into my skin after cleansing and before my moisturizer and sunscreen.

This oil-free serum simultaneously exfoliates skin and replenishes moisture for radiant, smooth, skin

3. Skinceuticals Retexturizing Activator

Proper exfoliation removes the barrier of dead skin cells clogging the skin and uncovers fresh new cells below. This opens the way for products to penetrate more deeply into the skin, making them more effective and leaving your skin looking fresh and healthy. Retexturing Activator is a revolutionary exfoliating product that replenishes and resurfaces the skin for noticeably soft, smooth skin texture.

What I love about the Skinceuticals Retexturizing Activator is that it exfoliants is so gently and without mechanical exfoliation as you would usually get  with scrubs or polishing beads. This oil-free serum has the resurfacing power of daily 20% glycolic acid treatment without the irritating effect. I’ve found the Retexturizing Activator really help with my skin texture and I usually use it every other day at night after between cleansing and moisturizing.

4. Skinceuticals Phyto Corrective Gel

Phyto Corrective Gel contains hyaluronic acid, cucumber, thyme, and other botanical ingredients, making it an ideal moisturizer for sensitive skin. It also features mulberry to help minimize the appearance of discoloration and promote a clear, fresh-looking complexion. I usually use this product every other day (on the days I don’t use the Retexturizing Activator) in conjunction with Advance Pigment Corrector (below).

Skinceuticals CE Ferulic is an antioxidant serum with a blend of vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid and the best defense against premature aging, loss of elasticity, and hyperpigmentation skin.

5. Advance Skin Discoloration Corrector

The Advanced Discoloration Corrector helps correct and prevent unwanted pigmentation and those dark spots left from acne, other scars, etc. In addition this product is also known to boost skin tone evenness and radiance. I’ve noticed visible improvements in discoloration as well as the luminosity and the radience of my skin. I’ve tried quite an array of skin brightening products, and I love how this one doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin at all. The serum itself is light weight, so it can be layered with the other serum without feeling like it’s overkill on your skin.

I’ve been using this entire routine of Skinceutical products for the past 2 months, and I have to say it’s made such a difference in reducing my hyperpigmentation, while also improving my skin tone and texture. I love that each one of these products is gentle enough for sensitive skin while still being effective in actually doing that they say they’ll do on the bottle.

Hyperpigmentation is a big problem for me too. My skin is just red so I’ve always used gentle cleansers. Thankfully I found a pretty good one but this sounds great too!

These do look like a good quality range of products for skin care. I have dark circles under my eyes and I have not yet found the best product to lighten them. I keep them hidden using concealers but I am looking for a more permanent cure. I am wondering if the vitamin C serum would help?

Hmm. I’ve never tried vitamin C under your eyes, but there might be some vitamin C eye creams out there you could try to!

I’ve been using vitamin C serum on and off, therefore, not seeing enough results. Quite tempted to try this product. I like what SkinCeuticals offers and the line up seems complete. Love your display and detailed review as well.
