New to working out? Start out with these 5 essential supplements for working out.
I’ve worked out on a regular basis for number years now. And over time I’ve refined both my routine and diet around it. But when I first started out I didn’t know a lot about supplements.
When I began my health and fitness journey, I struggled to find right information. There just wasn’t a basic guide on women’s supplements for working out.
With the barrage of marketing and ads out there, it was hard to know what was actually good for my body and what was just gimmicky. And on the other end, there were many advance guides with a laundry list of 10+ supplements.
I was working out to be in good shape and good health, but I wasn’t training for a marathon or pushing myself to the extreme.
What I was looking for was a supplement guide that was simple enough to manage with my busy lifestyle and routine, while fuelling my body to perform its best.
And if this sounds like you too, then this post is for you. I’ve teamed up with Naked Nutrition to put together this basic guide to women’s supplements for working out.
These 5 essential supplements will to help you supply your body with the nutrients it needs to make the most of your workouts.
5 Women’s Supplements for Working Out
There are a lot of supplements out there that do a wide range of things, from giving you more energy to replenishing your electrolytes.
But for me, simple is best. I’ve found that these 5 supplements have help to support my overall health and fitness, while being manageable to incorporate into my daily routine as part of my diet.
They cover your bases for overall health and to provide your body with nutrients to grow and build muscle, make the most of your workouts, and help you recover.
1. Whey Protein
Simple put, protein helps to repair and build muscle. And if you’re working out, adding more protein to your diet essential. Protein is one of the best supplements that help with muscle gain and weight loss.
Whey protein is the most popular protein on the market. That’s because it’s the most effective at helping to build lean muscle. No other protein digests as quickly as whey, sending amino acids to the muscle tissue when it’s needed most.
I’ve been using the Naked Chocolate Whey Protein Powder for the past while and it’s quickly become my favourite.
The Naked Whey Protein is made from grass-fed whey protein, with organic coconut sugar, and organic cacao. I love how it’s made from high quality ingredients and free of additives and sweeteners.
It’s hands down the best tasting protein powder I’ve had! The flavour is amazing and it blends beautifully into a light and delicious shake.
I feel well nourished for a few hours when I have it. And I can really taste and feel the quality of the natural ingredients.
When to take it: mornings, before and after workouts
2. BCAAS
BCAAs are another great women’s supplement for working out. It stand for branched-chain amino acids and are a specific group of three amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine.
They help to promote muscle development, improved exercise performance, and faster recovery after workouts. are free of any artificial additives like all the Naked products.
I recently added the Naked BCAAs to my lineup and found it great for muscle recovery as well as maintaining energy in my workouts. Like all the Naked products, the BCAAs are free of any artificial additives.
It comes in a powder form and I can easily add any drink. It’s flavourless on it’s own, it does mute the flavour of your mix a little. I’ll admit not the best tasting, but definitely better tasting than many of the other options out there while still being free of additives.
When to take it: before exercise, just after a workout, or before bed.
3. A Multivitamin
Multivitamins are a good for covering all your bases and overall health. It’s an easy way to get all your essential vitamins and fill in any gaps that you might be missing in your diet.
Particularly while you’re working out, your body needs to replenish its vitamins and minerals so taking a daily multi vitamin will keep you covered.
When to take: daily with or without food
4. Prebiotics + Probiotics
Your gut health is tied to overall health and the foundation of well being. It’s also often overlooked, so it’s important to keep it well maintained.
Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that can help keep your digestive system healthy. And prebiotics are the indigestible carbohydrates that act as food for this bacteria. Together they maintain gut health.
A balanced gut microbiome can lead to so many positive health benefits, including better nutrient absorption to help fuel your body, which is essential when you’re working out.
A regular probiotic and prebiotic supplement such as Naked’s Green Superfood Powder, or even yogurt, can help assist in maintain a healthy gut.
When to take: 30 minutes before meals, first thing in the morning
5. Omega-3 Fatty Acids/Fish Oil
Fish oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids supplements have been known to help to support overall health. But did you know, it has been found to turn on genes that stimulate fat burning?
Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for the nervous and cardiovascular systems, with anti-inflammatory effects that fight against exercise-induced muscle damage.
Adding them to your diet is beneficial for when you’re working out, as well as for overall health.
